Sirius Signal created the eVDSD market with our first model the C-1001 SOS light. Now a Coast Guard policy letter released December 21, 2018, will allow, a second LED-based SOS distress light, to meet nighttime visual distress signal carriage requirements, for recreational boaters.
RTCM (Radio Technical Commission for Maritime Services) standard 13200.0 has been added as equivalent to the ALL WHITE SOS electric distress light certified to CFR 161.013.
Both eVDSDs (electronic visual distress signal device) flash the internationally known SOS distress light sequence. The SOS signal is three short flashes, three long flashes, three short flashes. Studies conducted by the USCG R&D Center conclude that a two-color (red/orange & cyan) combination SOS flash pattern is more effective against certain shoreline background light clutter. At distance, both eVDSDs would appear white, however, recreational boaters operating in bays or near shorelines would find increased detectability in the two-color SOS option.
Recreational boaters can choose either the all-white SOS eVDSD or the Red/Orange & Cyan SOS eVDSD, based on their area of operation. Both eVDSD options meet the nighttime carriage portion of VDS (visual distress signals). Marine flares are not required to be carried by recreational boaters although for now, remain an option. eVDSDs must be carried in combination with an approved daytime distress signal to complete the full VDS carriage requirement.
